Mary Lee was born in 1933 and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She tells numerous stories of her parents, four brothers, her younger sister, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and cousins. She has fond memories of the close knit and extended family gatherings and celebrations. She tells of riding the trolley, and adventures in the big city. She attended Catholic grade schools in Chicago.

The family moved to Albuquerque, NM for her father’s health. She completed high school and began attending the College of St. Joseph there before moving back to Chicago where she lived with her relatives. She attended Mundelein College in Chicago. She later worked at Standard Oil Co. headquartered in Chicago as a secretary.

Sister Joseph Marie entered Benet Hill and made her first profession in 1971. She took further classes to earn an equivalency degree in Religious Education from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. Sister Joseph Marie ministered as a Director of Religious Education in Parishes in Canon City, Colorado Springs and Aurora in Colorado. In 1982 she was hired to work in the Marriage Tribunal two years before Colorado Springs became a Diocese. She continued this ministry until 2008. She reflected on this ministry by saying, “I always tried to walk with people where they were on their faith journey and work with them.” Once Colorado Springs became a Diocese, Sister Joseph Marie also was the archivist for the next 23 years.

Within the community, Sister Joseph Marie maintained her secretarial skills serving the Prioress, the Academy Principal and as secretary for numerous committees. She served on the Worship/Liturgy team, the Finance Stewardship Team and other task forces and committees over the years. She was the Director of Oblates for several years. She continued her archive ministry at Benet Hill and at Mount St. Francis after retiring from the Diocesan Offices.

Currently Sister Joseph Marie ministers within the community of Benet Hill.
